MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- The Tufts Jumbos completed a weekend set of double-headers against Wesleyan University by sweeping the Cardinals, 4-2 and 3-2, on Sunday afternoon. After the teams split on Saturday, Tufts took three out of four games in the series after the Sunday sweep.
The Jumbos pitched well in the wins. Junior Jeremy Davis (Little Falls, NY) went 6.1 innings in the opener, allowing one earned run striking out six with no walks. Freshman Aaron Narva (Albuquerque, NM) came in with runners on first and second with one out and threw a double-play ball to finish the Cardinals and earn the save. Junior Jeff Volinski (Andover, MA) went five innings allowing 2 runs in the nightcap, with freshman Ben Simon (Providence, RI) finishing with two scoreless innings for the save.
Tufts freshman DH Kyle Backstrom (Worcester, MA) went 3 for 3 with two runs scored in the first game. He singled, stole a base and scored the first Tufts run in the fourth, then doubled to lead off the sixth and scored to spark a two-run inning that gave Tufts a 4-1 lead. Alexander Brooks hit a solo home run in the fourth for the Cardinals.
The Jumbos won the second game despite getting just two hits. Freshman LF Brian Casey (Milford, MA) singled, stole second and scored on an error in the third. Back-to-back walks by sophomore SS Greg Chertok (New City, NY) and freshman catcher Ben Chang (Chicago, IL) to lead off the fifth led to runs on a ground out by Casey and a sacrifice fly by senior 3B Adam Kacamburas (North Reading, MA). Jason Vitko had two hits on the Wesleyan side.
