NORTH DARTMOUTH -- The host UMass Dartmouth Corsairs scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to propel their way to a 9-8 victory over the Tufts University Jumbos in college baseball action on Tuesday afternoon.

The five runs gave the Corsairs (15-11) an 8-3 lead. Tufts (12-11) chipped away with two runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth to make it 8-7. UMD scored a single run and led 9-7 entering the ninth. Tufts scored once in the ninth before the last two Jumbo batters struck out looking with the tying run on third base.

Tufts got out to a 1-0 lead on an RBI double by freshman DH Kyle Backstrom (Worcester, MA) in the first. Jumbo starter Jeff Volinski (Andover, MA) pitched three scoreless innings before the Corsairs tied the game at 1-1 in the fourth. A double by Doug Hittinger and a two-out, run-scoring single by Adam Diorio brought in the first UMD run.

The teams scored frequently from there on out. The score was tied 3-3 entering the decisive bottom of the sixth. The Corsairs loaded the bases and scored on a passed ball, two singles, a fielder's choice and a sacrifice fly.

Tufts sophomore SS Greg Chertok (New City, NY) hit a two-run single in the top of the eighth to pull the Jumbos within 8-7. UMD would score the eventual game-winning run unearned in the bottom of the eighth on a single by Robert Del Duca. In the Tufts ninth, they loaded the bases with no outs on two walks and a single by senior 3B Adam Kacamburas (North Reading, MA). Freshman 1B Bryan McDavitt (Holden, MA) brought one home on a sacrifice fly, but the other two were left stranded.

Alfred Jean earned the win for the Corsairs, going six innings allowing seven hits and three runs. Kyle Darrow was shaky in the ninth, but picked up the save. Del Duca finished 2 for 5 with two runs and two RBIs. Hittinger also had two hits and two runs scored.

Senior Dave Frew (Worcester, MA) took the loss for the Jumbos. Chertok led the Tufts offense with a 3 for 4 day and 3 RBIs. Freshman CF Chris Decembrele (Walpole, MA) had two hits and two runs scored.
