BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. -- Sophomore P Zak Smotherman (Westborough, MA) allowed just one hit over six innings, and freshman 1B Bryan McDavitt (Holden, MA) had two hits and three runs batted in, as the Tufts Baseball team defeated Massachusetts Maritime Academy, 8-1, on Wednesday afternoon.

The victory was the fourth straight for Tufts, which improved to 10-6 overall. MMA dropped to 2-3.

Smotherman struck out seven and walked none to earn his first victory of the season and lowering his earned run average to 3.06. He retired the first 15 Buccaneer hitters before catcher Mike Blomberg singled in the fifth. Tufts led 8-0 by that point after scoring five runs in the top of the fourth.

McDavitt had an RBI single in the first and drove home a run with a grounder to second after sophomore RF Matt Clement (Norwood, MA) tripled to lead off the third. The Jumbos broke it open with five in the fifth, highlighted by a two-run triple from sophomore SS Greg Chertok (New City, NY).

The Buccaneers scored their lone run in the seventh when third baseman Anthony Barrett led off with a triple against Tufts reliever Erik Johanson (Wynnewood, PA) and scored on a double by first baseman Greg Leblanc. Mass Maritime finished with just five hits for the game.

Tufts senior 3B Adam Kacamburas (North Reading, MA) went 3 for 4 with two runs scored and an RBI to join McDavitt as offensive leaders for the Jumbos. Freshman CF Chris Decembrele (Walpole, MA) had two hits, as did Chertok. Jumbo freshman P Aaron Narva (Albuquerque, NM) closed the game with two innings of one-hit relief.
