GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Tufts Baseball team posted its first win of the season in convincing fashion, 17-6, at Guilford College on Monday afternoon. The Jumbos (1-2) had 23 hits in the game, including five with four runs scored and four RBIs by red-hot senior 3B Adam Kacamburas (North Reading, MA). Freshman P Ben Simon (Providence, RI) was the beneficiary of the support to pick up his first collegiate victory.
Tufts led 4-1 after two innings, with Kacamburas doubling in both innings to score a run and drive one in. The Jumbos then broke the game open with six runs in the fourth. Kacamburas contributed a two-run single and freshman C Chris Decembrele (Walpole, MA) ripped a two-run triple. It was the second freshman three-bagger of the inning for the Jumbos, including DH Kyle Backstrom's (Worcester, MA) to lead off the inning.
Simon had given up one run in four innings when he ran into short trouble in the fifth. Guilford loaded the bases, then sophomore Rob Bittner unloaded them with a three-run double making it 10-4. In the sixth, a run-scoring double by Decembrele (3 for 6, 3 RBIs) helped Tufts to a 12-4 margin. Two Tufts errors led to two unearned runs for the Quakers in the bottom of the inning.
The Jumbos continued to score in the late innings, adding two in the seventh and three in the ninth. Kacamburas hit his third double of the game to drive in a run and eventually score in the seventh. Senior 2B Nick Palange (Hudson, MA) had his fourth hit of the game in the ninth and scored.
Simon went six innings for the win, allowing 11 hits and a walk while striking out three. Senior Dave Frew (Worcester, MA) came on in the seventh and earned the save with three innings of two-hit, scoreless relief. The Jumbos did their damage against six Guilford pitchers.
Bitter finished 3 for 5 with 4 RBIs for the Quakers, while senior CF A.J. McCauley was 3 for 5 with two runs scored.
