GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Visiting Tufts University (3-2) came from behind to defeat Greensboro College (18-8), 6-2, at War Memorial Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. The Jumbo victory was its third straight. Junior pitcher Jeremy Davis (Little Falls, NY) went seven strong innings for the win, allowing no earned runs and striking out eight.
Greensboro led 2-0 at the end of two innings on the two unearned runs. Brent Justice walked and was eventually driven in by a Larry Lockhart sacrifice fly in the first inning. In the second frame, Jesse Sutton reached on a base on balls. He then stole second and advanced to third base on an error. Davis, who improved to 1-1 as the winning pitcher, then balked Sutton to home.
The Jumbos scored two runs in the fourth to tie the game. Senior 2B Nick Palange (Hudson, MA) led off with home run and freshman Bryan McDavitt (Holden, MA) singled home a run with two outs. Tufts took its first lead, 5-2, by scoring three runs. Greensboro reliever Matt Tully started the inning by hitting a batter and walking the next two to load the bases with no outs. Back-to-back singles by freshman LF Chris Decembrele (Walpole, MA) and McDavitt, and a sacrifice fly by junior CF Jeff Volinski (Andover, MA) scored the runs. A single to lead off the seventh by junior SS Frank Dinucci (Wilton, CT), a sacrifice by Palange, and an RBI single by sophomore RF Matt Clement (Norwood, MA) plated the sixth Tufts run.
Freshman Aaron Narva (Albuquerque, NM) picked up where Davis left off, pitching two innings of hitless relief.
Jeremy Morrison went 2-5 with a stolen base and Orlando Lago was 2-4 for the home team. Freshman DH Kyle Backstrom (Worcester, MA) and McDavitt were both 2-4 for Tufts.
