BRUNSWICK, Me. -- The Tufts University Baseball team (11-9) racked up 15 hits
and received a complete game from senior pitcher Randy Newsom (Cincinnati,
OH) to cruise to a 12-3 win over host Bowdoin College (15-8) on Friday
afternoon. The Jumbos pick up their first NESCAC East win of the campaign and
move to 1-3 in
conference, while Bowdoin drops to 5-2 in the NESCAC. The teams will play a
doubleheader on Saturday beginning at noon.
The Jumbos got four runs in the third and plated six in the fifth to jump out
to a commanding 11-0 edge. Freshman Kyle Backstrom (Worcester, MA) went 3
for 6 with 2 RBIs and junior catcher Bob Kenny (Milford, MA) was 3 for 5
to lead Tufts. Every Jumbo reached base on the afternoon as Bowdoin starter

Powers (3-2) was touched for nine earned runs in just four innings.
Newsom (4-1) allowed three runs in the complete game, striking out nine batters and walking just one. Leading the Polar Bears offensively were Manny Lora, who went 2 for 3 with a run scored, and Jared Lemieux, who went 2 for 4. Bowdoin received strong relief pitching from Erik Morrison, Kevin Bougie, Tom McMahon and Travis Dube, who allowed just one earned run over the final five innings.
