Game Box Score

LEWISTON, Me. -- Senior Randy Newsom (Cincinnati, OH) threw a complete game four-hitter to lead the Tufts Baseball team to a 6-1 win over Bates in a New England Small College Athletic Conference East Division game to keep the Jumbos in the hunt for the final playoff spot in the division on Friday afternoon. The Jumbos have to sweep a three-game series from the Bobcats this weekend in order to supplant Bowdoin as the East's #2 seed in the upcoming conference tournament.

Newsom allowed the ball out of the infield just seven times, striking out seven, walking six and and inducing 13 ground ball outs to improve to 6-1. Tufts is now 17-11, 6-4 in the NESCAC East. Bates fell to 11-16 and 4-6.

Bobcat starter Griffin Finan (Bethesda, MD) got out of a bases loaded jam in the first, but Tufts started the second with four straight singles to build a 3-0 lead. The Jumbos added a pair of unearned runs in the fourth, and senior 3B Adam Kacamburas (North Reading, MA) hit a sacrifice fly to center to score junior catcher Bob Kenny (Milford, MA) in the fifth to increase the lead to 6-0.

Bates' lone run came on a throwing error in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Kenny was 3 for 5 to lead the Jumbo offense, while freshman Brian Casey (Milford, MA) went 2 for 4 with an RBI. Kacamburas was 1-for-2 with two RBI. John O'Neill (Cumberland, RI) led Bates, going 2 for 4.

The teams meet again on Saturday for pair starting at 12 noon.
