LAURINBURG, N.C. - Tufts split with St. Andrews Presbyterian College in non-conference baseball action Monday afternoon. The Jumbos edged St. Andrews 5-4 in game one, but the Knights came back to post a 10-2 win in the second game.
The Jumbos (3-1) plated three runs off four hits, including a leadoff home run by junior DH Greg Hickey (Medway, MA), to take a 3-0 lead in the second inning of game one. The Knights (15-15) would get on the board in the bottom of the inning when Brandon Lewis crossed the plate on a fielder's choice by Trent Sheppard.
Tufts stretched the margin to 5-1 in the top of the fifth. They scored a single run in the third on a double by senior SS Brian Shapiro (Swampscott, MA) and a Hickey single, and another in the fifth on a Hickey single and an RBI single by sophomore 2B Frank Dinucci (Wilton, CT). Hickey finished 4 for 4 with two runs and two RBIs. Dinucci was 2 for 2 with two RBIs.
St. Andrews would score a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth inning off Tufts starter Randy Newsom (Cincinnati, OH) to trail 5-3. Everett Kelly doubled down the right field line to start a two-out rally in the bottom of the seventh. Demetrius Jordan reached base on a hit-by-pitch, and Jason Catlin stroked a single up the middle to drive in Kelly, leaving the Knights trailing by one run. Lewis grounded out for the final out of the game.
Newsom went the distance, scattering seven hits with three strike outs.St. Andrews used four pitchers in the outing. Demetrius Jordan (0-2) took the loss, allowing four hits and three runs in two innings.
In the second game, St. Andrews jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings. The Jumbos would put a run on the board in the third inning, but the Knights would expand their lead to 10-2 by the bottom of the sixth.
Catlin cracked a three-run homer in the second inning. Demetrius Jordan smacked a two-run home run in the fourth inning, and Marc Hammonds ripped a
two-out solo blast in the fifth. Jumbo center fielder Evan Zupancic (Lake
Oswego, OR) robbed Casey Clary of a home run in the second inning when he snagged the ball at
the fence.
Steve Knutson (2-2) pitched a complete game for St. Andrews, allowing five hits with seven strikeouts. Tufts
sophomore starter Jeff Volinski (Andover, MA) took the loss, giving up 16 hits and nine
runs in five innings. Demetrius Jordan went 4-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored to lead
the Knights. Kelly and Matt Jordan were 3-for-3 while Hammonds was 3-for-4. Four Jumbos singled and Zupancic had a double.
