MEDFORD – Freshman RF Matt Clement (Norwood, MA) crunched a two-run double to deep center field highlighting a four-run seventh inning that carried the Tufts Baseball team to a 6-3 victory over Massachusetts Maritime Academy on a rainy Wednesday afternoon at Huskins Field.

After senior CF Evan Zupancic (Lake Oswego, OR) and senior SS Brian Shapiro (Swampscott, MA) led off the Tufts seventh with singles, Clement scored them both with his one-out double. Sophomore C Bob Kenny (Milford, MA) and sophomore 1B John McBride (Billerica, MA) hit back-to-back doubles with two outs in the inning to give the Jumbos a 6-3 cushion.

The visiting Buccaneers scored twice in the top of the first to lead 2-0. Junior RF Paul Tedesco (Kingston, MA) led off with a first-pitch double to left and scored on a single by sophomore 1B Greg LeBlanc (East Falmouth, MA). Senior CF Dan Mochen (Quincy, MA), who had walked, scored the second run when Tufts starter Jeremy Davis (Little Falls, NY) attempted to pick-off LeBlanc at second and the throw sailed into center field.

Massachusetts Maritime starter Kevin McLaughlin (North Falmouth, MA) retired the first 12 Tufts hitters. The Jumbos finally got to him in the fifth when Shapiro led off with a double and junior DH Greg Hickey (Medway, MA) belted his second home run of the season to tie the game at 2-2. MMA regained the lead in the sixth when Mochen's double plated freshman 2B Jake Grabell (Milford, CT) for a 3-2 lead.

Tufts (9-4) used seven pitchers with a mind towards getting everyone some work. Senior Jon Lee (Manhasset Hills, NY), who pitched a no-hitter on Saturday versus Bates, was the pitcher of record when Tufts scored its four runs in the seventh and thus earned his third win. Junior Randy Newsom (Cincinnati, OH) pitched the eighth and ninth for his first save. Shapiro had two hits and scored two runs for Tufts.

McLaughlin took the loss despite a good start for MMA. Sophomore LF Shawn Cassidy (Braintree, MA) and freshman C Mike Blomberg (Groveland, MA) had two hits apiece for the Bucs (2-4).
