FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Behind a strong performance by starter Eric Autry, Methodist rolled to a 5-1 non-conference victory over visiting Tufts at Shelley Field. The victory improves the Monarchs, ranked 10th in NCAA Division III, to 16-4 overall, while Tufts is now 3-2.
Autry, a sophomore right-hander, went seven strong innings, scattering six hits with two walks and one strikeout to improve to 2-1 on the season. At one point, Autry retired 10 straight batters. Senior David Reece and freshman Blake Maxwell each pitched an inning, allowing no hits with one strikeout each.
Tufts led 1-0 early, with sophomore 2B Frank Dinucci (Wilton, CT) singling home junior DH Greg Hickey (Medway, MA) in the top of the second. The Monarchs scored three runs in the third on RBI doubles by Jesus Adames and Jimmy Ross. Jay Lucas scored on a wild pitch to tie the game 1-1. Adames' RBI double scored Kevin Wallace, and Adames then scored on Ross' RBI double. The Monarchs added a run in the seventh on an RBI single by Dan Glies and another run in the eighth on Wallace's RBI double.
Wallace went 3 for 5 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Tom Matuseski went 2 for 2, Adames went 2-for-3 and Glies went 2-for-4. Hickey went 2 for 4 for Tufts. Jumbo starter Jon Lee (Manhasset Hills, NY) went six innings, allowing seven hits, three walks and two earned runs.
