LYNCHBURG, Va. -- The Tufts Baseball team opened its 2003 season with a 10-6 victory at Lynchburg College on Friday afternoon. It was the first game of the team's annual spring trip.

Senior Jon Lee (Manhasset Hills, NY) earned the win on the mound, going six innings and allowing three earned runs. Junior DH Greg Hickey (Medway, MA) went 5 for 5 with two runs scored and three batted in. Senior SS Brian Shapiro (Swampscott, MA) and junior Nick Palange (Hudson, MA) had two hits apiece.

Tufts scored four runs in the second, two in the third and three more in the fourth to take a 9-1 lead. Sophomore C Bob Kenny (Milford, MA) and sophomore 1B John McBride (Billerica, MA) each had RBI singles in the second. Hickey's triple scored Shapiro after his double to lead off the third. Hickey then stroked a two-run single in the fourth.

Lynchburg scored two runs apiece in the sixth and seventh innings to cut the lead to 9-6. Center fielder Steven Scott hit a two-run home run in the sixth off Lee. He departed at the end of the inning and four Jumbo relievers finished off the game.

John Garrison and Chris Knowles had two hits apiece for Lynchburg, which dropped to 3-8 overall.
