WATERVILLE, Me. -- Senior Jon Lee (Manhasset Hills, NY) and junior Randy Newsom (Cincinnati, OH) each pitched complete games to power Tufts University to a double-header sweep of Colby College in East Division play in the New England Small College Athletic Conference on Saturday. With the sweep, Tufts (18-8 overall) finished 9-3 in the East and clinched one of the four sports in the upcoming conference tournament.
With the win, Lee moved to 8-2 this season and 28-6 in his career, tying the Tufts all-time record for career wins set by Bud Niles 53 years ago. Colby (7-14-1, 1-9 NESCAC East) tied the first game at 4-4 with four runs in the fourth inning, but Tufts got the eventual game-winning run on an RBI double by Jon Herbert (Davidsonville, MD) in the top of the fifth inning. Sophomore John McBride (Billerica, MA) doubled twice in the first game and classmate Frank Dinucci (Wilton, CT) had three hits for the Jumbos. B.L. Lippert (Augusta, ME) went 2 for 2 with two stolen bases for Colby. Jay Johnson (Norwood, MA) also had two hits. Dan Deacon (Rumford, RI) pitched a complete game for the Mules.
Newsom is 4-1 after taking an 11-5 win in the nightcap. Senior tri-captain Evan Zupancic (Lake Oswego, OR) went 3 for 4 with five runs scored in the second game for Tufts. Brandon Royce (Augusta, Maine) had a home run and a double for Colby in the nightcap.
