Game Box Score

BRUNSWICK, Maine - Sophomore Jimmy Shea's RBI single in the 11th and four shutout innings by reliever Travis Dube led the Bowdoin Baseball team to a key NESCAC East victory on Friday, defeating Tufts University 5-3 in 11 innings. Bowdoin improves to 9-9 overall and 3-2 in NESCAC play, while Tufts drops to 11-5 and 3-1, respectively. This game, as well as Saturday's doubleheader were moved from Medford to Brunswick due to field conditions. Tufts served as the home team in Friday's contest.

The Jumbos scored twice in the fourth to take an early lead against  Bowdoin's first-year starter Trevor Powers. A single by Tufts catcher Bob Kenny (Milford, MA) drove in Matt Clement (Norwood, MA) and Brian Shapiro (Swampscott, MA) to give the Jumbos an early 2-0 edge. Tufts added one more run in the bottom of the sixth with one out when John McBride (Billerica, MA) barely beat out a double-play chance from Bowdoin, scoring Frank Dinucci (Wilton, CT) for a 3-0 lead.

The Polar Bears rallied to cut the lead in the seventh when pinch-hitter Andy Workman hit a bouncer to short that wasn't handled by Shapiro, scoring Rick Leclerc to make it 3-1. The Polar Bears failed to capitalize more in the inning as Tufts starter Dave Martin (Arlington, MA) forced an inning-ending double play to get out of the jam.

Martin continued to cruise until the ninth inning as Leclerc singled to lead off the inning. After Manny Lora popped out, T.J. McLeod beat out an infield hit, but Leclerc was thrown out trying to advance to third. Down to their final out, Andy DeMarco kept the rally alive with a base hit, and with runners on first and second, Jared Lemieux rifled a shot to right center, scoring two runs and tying the game at three apiece.

Dube relieved Powers in the seventh and tossed 4.2 innings of shutout  relief, putting Bowdoin in position to take the game in extras. Lora singled to open the 11th and was sacrificed to second by McLeod. After Erik Morrison struck out, Lemieux singled to move Lora to third. Jimmy Shea, who was 3-5 on the day, singled to score Lora and Bowdoin added an insurance run on an error by right-fielder Clement to take a 5-3 edge. Dube closed out the bottom of the inning 1-2-3.

Martin earned a no-decision for Tufts, tossing 8.2 innings and allowing  only two earned runs. Randy Newsom (Cincinnati, OH) took his first loss of the season in relief and falls to 3-1 on the year. Powers went 6.1 innings and allowed three earned runs for Bowdoin. McLeod had three hits for Bowdoin, as did Shea. Shapiro ended with three hits for the Jumbos.
