At Medford, MA
MEDFORD – The Tufts Baseball team opened their home season on Friday with a 10-6 win over NESCAC East opponent Bates College. Starter Dave Martin (Arlington, MA) fell one out short of a complete game, striking out eight and stretching his record to 3-0.
The Jumbos opened the
bottom of the first with a pair of singles by LF Jon Herbert (Davidsonville,
MD) and 3B Adam Kacamburas (North Reading, MA).
Bates starter Mike Kinsman (Yarmouth, ME) fell behind later in the
inning, walking three batters in a row. That forced both RF Matt Clement
(Norwood, MA) and SS Brian Shapiro (Swampscott, MA) home and giving
Tufts the first two of their 10 runs.
In the bottom of the
third, Tufts CF Evan Zupancic (Lake Oswego, OR) led off with a single to
center field followed by Shapiro reaching base on an error by Bates 2B Adam
Taranto (Sudbury, MA). DH Greg
Hickey (Medway, MA) scored both runners on a double. Hickey went 2 for 4 on the game.
The fourth inning
provided action from both sides of the field.
Bates scored three runs off two singles, OF Nate Reid's (Greenfield,
MA) double, and the sole error by the Jumbos. That pulled the Bobcats within 4-3 in the top of the fourth.
Tufts answered with a big inning of their own, scoring five runs to make it 9-3.
The Jumbos had six hits, including a two-run double by Zupancic, and two
Bates errors.
After a sole Jumbo run in the bottom of the fifth from a wild pitch, three scoreless innings went by before Bates returned in the top of the ninth with three runs. Junior SS Nate Maxwell (Newport, VT) had a two-run double in the inning. Junior Rob Maguire (Wayland, MA) finished 2 for 5 with two runs for Bates.
