HAMPTON, VA. -- The Apprentice School saw its 10-game winning streak snapped on Saturday with a pair of one-run losses to Tufts University, 1-0 and 4-3. The games were the first action for the Jumbos on their spring trip since Tuesday. Wednesday's and Thursday's games were rained out and the team was idle on Friday.
In game one, Tufts senior pitcher David Martin (Arlington, MA) had a no-hitter going until Bobby Quesenberry singled to start the bottom of the sixth inning. The Jumbos (5-2) scored in the top of the sixth on a Greg Hickey (Medway, MA) single that scored Nick Palange (Hudson, MA) with two outs. The Builders had a chance in the seventh with two outs as Darrell Taylor doubled to center field, but was stranded as Ben Jones grounded out to end the game.
In game two, Tufts senior CF Evan Zupancic (Lake Oswego, OR) singled in Adam Kacamburas (North Reading, MA) in the fifth inning to put Tufts ahead 4-0. In the bottom of that inning, Apprentice School pushed across three runs with Matt Chieppa singling in two and Travis Cobb singling in the third.
