MEDFORD -- Tufts University and Wesleyan University split a NESCAC double-header in college baseball action on Sunday afternoon. Jumbo junior P Jon Lee (Manhasset Hills, NY) went the distance for a 4-1 win the first game, losing his shutout bid in the top of the seventh. In the second game, Wesleyan junior CF Josh Daniels (Berkeley, CA) doubled home a run in the top of the seventh and classmate Nate Whalen (Chicago, IL) went the distance on the mound for a 2-1 Cardinals victory.

After Tufts swept the Cardinals in a double-header at Wesleyan on Saturday, 4-0 and 10-2, the teams were right back at it in Medford today. With the win in the first game, the Jumbos extended their winning streak to 12 games. That's the team's longest since 1980. It ended in the second game, with Wesleyan (11-8) snapping a four-game slide in the series against Tufts (12-4-1).

Lee, the 2001 NESCAC Pitcher of the Year who has been hampered by a foot injury early this season, was strong in his first New England start. A solo home run by Wesleyan junior RF Matt Johnson (Worcester, MA) - Wesleyan's first home run of the year - broke up Lee's shutout in the top of the seventh. He struck out six and walked just one for the victory. The Jumbo offense scored all the runs it would need with two in the second. Sophomore 3B Adam Kacamburas (North Reading, MA) hit a one-out single and then stole second. He scored on a double by junior LF Dave Martin (Arlington, MA), who then stole third and scored on a throwing error on the play. Tufts added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, including junior CF Evan Zupancic's (Lake Oswego, OR) fourth home run of the season. He had a game-high two hits.

Whalen and Tufts senior P Steve Lapham (Newburyport, MA) staged a pitcher's duel in game two. Lapham allowed just one hit in his five innings of work. Wesleyan scored a run in the top of the first when junior 2B Jim Barletto (Hull, MA) led off with a walk, advanced to second on an errant pick-off throw, then scored on a triple by junior DH Dave Vanech (Providence, RI). Whalen allowed his only run in the second when Tufts junior SS Brian Shapiro (Swampscott, MA) led off with a double and scored on a single by sophomore C Greg Hickey (Medway, MA). The score remained 1-1 until the top of the seventh. Wes senior 3B Dave Bushnell (South Dennis, MA) led off with a single, was sacrificed to second, then scored on Daniels' double. In the bottom of the inning, Whalen struck out the first two Tufts hitters but then walked Zupancic. He stole second to get into scoring position, but was thrown out trying to steal third on ball four to sophomore DH Nick Palange (Hudson, MA). Game over.

Vanech had two hits in the second game for Wesleyan.
