MEDFORD -- Junior Dave Martin (Arlington, MA) pitched a three-hit shutout in game one, and the Tufts offense exploded for six runs in the top of the seventh of game two, as the Jumbos swept a double-header from Wesleyan University in NESCAC baseball action on Saturday afternoon.
The sweep stretched Tufts' winning streak to 11 games, the longest since 1994. After an 0-3-1 start, Tufts is now 11-3-1. Wesleyan lost a four-game winning streak and dropped to 10-7. These teams do it all over again tomorrow with two in Medford.
Martin continued his stellar pitching early this season, lowing his earned run average to 0.30. He has allowed just one earned run in 30 innings of work this year. Tufts recorded 17 outs via ground balls in the first game. Martin struck out two, walked two and hit a batter. Tufts got all the runs it needed in the first inning, coupling three walks with an RBI single by senior RF Dan Callahan (Medfield, MA) and a sacrifice fly by sophomore 3B Adam Kacamburas (North Reading, MA). Another run scored on a wild pitch. Callahan finished the game 3 for 3 with a double to lift his batting average to .455.
In game two, Tufts broke a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning with freshman 2B Frank Dinucci (Wilton, CT) smacked an RBI triple after Kacamburas led off with a walk, stole second and scored on an error. Though Tufts left the bases loaded, they added six in the seventh inning to win going away. Sophomore C Greg Hickey (Medway, MA) highlighted the inning with a bases-loaded single to drive in two runs. Senior 1B Tim Ayres (Irvine, CA) had two hits, including a triple, and scored twice for Tufts.
Junior Jim Barletto and sophomore Angus Fredenburg both went 2 for 3 with an RBI for Wesleyan.
