NORTH DARTMOUT H -- Junior CF Evan Zupancic's (Lake Oswego, OR) three-run home run in the top of the sixth broke open a close game and sent the Tufts Jumbos on to a 9-5 victory at UMass Dartmouth in New England college baseball action on Tuesday afternoon. The home run was Zupancic's ninth of the season, setting a Tufts single-season record.
Leading 8-5, Tufts added an insurance run in the ninth on a double by senior RF Dan Callahan (Medfield, MA). That was the 42nd double of his career, also establishing a Jumbo team record. The win broke a three-game non-conference losing streak for Tufts, who improved to 18-7-1 overall. UMass Dartmouth fell to 18-13 with their third straight loss.
Corsair senior 2B Mike Dougan led off the bottom of the first with a home run. Tufts took a 4-1 lead in the top of the second, with freshman 2B Frank Dinucci (Wilton, CT) contributing a two-run single. The Corsairs tied the score at 4-4 with two in the third on wild pitches and another in the fourth on an RBI double by Mike Rahme. Junior Mike Byron (Hanover, MA) relieved starter Steve Lapham (Newburyport, MA) to start the fifth and earned the win for the Jumbos with five innings of one-run, three-hit relief.
Zupancic finished 3 for 5 with two runs and three RBI, while freshman C Bob Kenny (Milford, MA) was 2 for 4 with two runs and an RBI. Dougan was 3 for 4 with two runs for the Corsairs.
