MEDFORD - Freshman C Bob Kenny (Milford, MA) spanked a two-run single through the left side in the bottom of the sixth to make the difference in game one, and then Tufts out-slugged Trinity in game two, as the Jumbos swept an important New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) East Division double-header against the Bantams on Saturday afternoon. The first game finished 7-5 Tufts, and the nightcap was 12-10 Jumbos.
With the two wins, Tufts (17-7-1 overall) improved to 7-1 in the NESCAC East to remain in first place. Trinity, which clinched a spot in the NESCAC playoffs in a 2-1 win over Tufts on Friday afternoon, dropped to 8-4 in the division and 19-8 overall. It is still to be determined which team will earn the East pennant and host the NESCAC tournament to be played May 10-11. With the sweep on Saturday, Tufts earned the important tie-breaker over Trinity.
The first game was tied 4-4 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. With one out, Jumbos Tim Ayres (Irvine, CA), Greg Hickey (Medway, MA), Adam Kacamburas (North Reading, MA) and Kenny laced consecutive singles, with Kenny's plating two runs for a 6-4 Tufts lead. Jumbo junior CF Evan Zupancic (Lake Oswego, OR) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force home the seventh Tufts run. Trinity scored a run and brought the tying run to the plate in the top of the seventh, but Tufts reliever Brian Shapiro (Swampscott, MA) struck out the final batter to earn the win. The visiting Bantams had taken an early 2-0 lead on back-to-back home runs by freshman C Andrew Fries (Dublin, OH) and junior 1B Kurt Piantek (Wallingford, CT) in the first. Piantek's solo shot was his 42nd RBI, setting a Trinity single-season record. With Trinity leading 4-2 after four, Tufts tied the score in their fifth on a solo home run by Hickey and a run-scoring single by junior LF Jon Herbert (Davidsonville, MD). Trinity freshman 3B Jayme Dorr (Osterville, MA) and Shapiro also homered in the game, which featured five dingers. Shapiro and Tufts starter Jon Lee (Manhasset Hills, NY) combined to strike out 11 Trinity batters in the game. Fries and Dorr were both 2 for 4 with a run and two RBIs for Trinity. Ayres, Hickey and Kenny were 2 for 3 for the Jumbos.
Trailing 6-4 entering the bottom of the fourth in game two, Tufts scored five runs with the help of three Trinity errors to build a 9-6 lead. Zupancic led off with a solo home run, his eighth of the year to tie the Tufts single-season mark. Senior RF Dan Callahan (Medfield, MA) drilled a run-scoring triple, his second of the game, to tie the score at 6-6. The Bantams scored three runs in the top of the seventh to close the gap to 10-9. Senior SS Andy Freimuth (Bristol, CT) led off with a home run, senior Nick Callini (Westfield, MA) had a run-scoring, pinch-hit double, and Dorr added an RBI single. Hickey gave Tufts some breathing room with a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to put the lead at 12-9. Trinity senior Tom Osuch (Fairhaven, MA) singled and scored in the eighth, then the Bantams again brought the tying run to the plate in the last inning. Shapiro again, on in relief, retired the last two hitters to save the win. Freimuth went 3 for 5 with two runs and six RBIs for Trinity. Dorr also had three hits. Callahan was 3 for 5 with three runs scored and Zupancic was 3 for 5 with two runs for Tufts. Sophomore Dave Frew (Shrewbury, MA) earned the win in relief.
