HARWICH, Mass. -- Sophomore P Randy Newsom (Cincinnati, OH) tossed a complete-game six-hitter and struck out a career-high 13 to lead third-seeded Tufts to a 7-1 victory over fifth-seeded Suffolk in third round play of the 2002 NCAA Division III Baseball Regional hosted by the ECAC at Whitehouse Field. The Jumbos (27-9-1) advance in the tournament to face second-seeded Eastern Connecticut in an elimination round contest on Sunday evening at Whitehouse Field beginning at 7:00.
Tufts, which established a school record for victories in one season with its triumph, took a 1-0 lead in its first at-bat on junior SS Brian Shapiro's (Swampscott, MA) sacrifice fly, but the Rams (27-14-1) evened matters in the second on an RBI double by junior Bryan McManaway. The Jumbos took the lead for good in the sixth on a two-run single by sophomore Greg Hickey (Medway, MA) and a throwing error for a 5-1 advantage, and the winners tacked on two insurance tallies in the seventh on an RBI single by Shapiro that was followed by an RBI triple by Hickey to close out the scoring. Newsom took care of the rest on the mound for Tufts in picking up his sixth victory in seven decisions this spring.
Shapiro and senior Dan Callahan (Medfield, MA) each had three hits as part of a 13-hit Tufts attack, while
Hickey, junior Jon Herbert (Davidsonville, MD) and freshman
Adam Kacamburas (North Reading, MA) each added a pair of safeties for the Jumbos. Junior Ryan Racicot
rapped out a pair of hits in the setback for Suffolk, as sophomore Kris Stokes
allowed 11 hits and five earned runs in 6 1/3 innings to take the loss on the
mound for the Rams, as he fell to 2-1 on the season.
Tufts will meet Eastern Connecticut for the second time in the NCAA Division III Regional hosted by the ECAC, as the Jumbos dropped a 5-2
decision to the Warriors on Friday evening.
