LAURINBURG, NC -- The Tufts University Jumbos continued their rough season start by dropping a double-header to St. Andrew's Presbyterian in Division III baseball action on Monday, 6-0, 3-2. With the losses the Jumbos dropped to 0-3 on the season, while the Knights improved to 18-13.
The Knights caught fire early. St. Andrews 2B Jason Catlin went 2-for-2 with a home run, a double, a sacrifice, and 4 RBI in the first game. Tufts junior P Jon Lee (Manhasset Hills, NY) got hit hard early, giving up five runs -- four earned -- in 2.2 innings of work to take the loss (0-1).
In the nightcap, Tufts sophomore P Randy Newsom (Cincinatti, OH) pitched well in the complete game loss. He gave up three runs -- one earned -- on only four hits. Tufts got on the board early, with freshman 2B Frank Dinucci (Wilton, CT) reaching on a walk and scoring on senior RF Dan Callahan's (Medfield, MA) ground out. The Knights struck back in the second, scoring two runs on an error, a walk, and a balk to take the lead, 2-1. The Jumbos tied it up again in the third when Dinucci again walked, was advanced on a single, and scored on a wild pitch. The game remained tied until the fifth inning, when the Knights scored the winning run on three singles, despite an inning-ending double play.
The Jumbos will continue their spring break trip tomorrow when they travel to Methodist College, who are the top Division III team in the nation with a 19-1 record.
