ROCKY MOUNT, NC -- After three attempts, the Jumbos finally jumped off the slide, earning their first victory of the season 7-2 over North Carolina Wesleyan, in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. Although the offense put up seven runs for the second consecutive contest, the player of game was the starting pitcher, senior tri-captain Steve Lapham (Newburyport, MA).
After surrendering one run in the bottom of the third inning, putting the Jumbos down 0-1, Lapham did not allow another NC Wesleyan runner to cross the plate again until the ninth inning. Lapham displayed his stamina by pitching a solid nine innings of six hit baseball. He only walked one batter and only one of the two runs that scored were earned. Lapham struck out two to up his record to 1-0.
From the plate, senior tri-captain Dan Callahan (Medfield, MA) and junior shortstop Brian Shapiro (Swampscott, MA) carried the offense. Callahan went 3-5, including one triple with two runs batted in and two runs scored. Shapiro went 2-4, including a homerun with two runs batted in and one run scored. Of the Jumbos nine hits, Callahan and Shapiro accounted for five.
