BUZZARDS BAY -- Visiting Tufts pounded out 25 hits, including four doubles, two triples and four home runs, in a 25-4 rout of Massachusetts Maritime Academy in New England college baseball action on Tuesday afternoon.
The win was the ninth straight for the Jumbos (9-3-1) after an 0-3-1 start and featured a record-setting performance by senior tri-captain Dan Callahan's (Medfield, MA). The right fielder broke the team's records for hits and triples in a career during the game, which he finished 4 for 6 with three runs batted in.
His record-breaking triple, the 10th of his career, highlighted a six-run second inning that got Tufts going. He added another three-bagger in a six-run third as Tufts jumped to a 12-2 lead. He became the program's all-time hits leader with his 182nd, a single, in the ninth inning. Both marks were previously held by Dan Morse (1996-99), who had nine triples and 181 hits for the Jumbos.
Junior CF Evan Zupancic (Lake Oswego, OR) smashed two home runs for Tufts, in the fourth and ninth innings. He finished 4 for 6 with six runs batted in. Junior DH Jon Herbert (Davidonville, MD) also drove home six runs and hit his first home run of the season. Junior SS Brian Shapiro (Swampscott, MA) also homered, his fourth of the year, and knocked in four runs. Sophomore LF Drew Blewett (Great Falls, MT) had three hits and three rbi, while freshman 2B Frank Dinucci (Wilton, CT) scored five runs batting ninth.
Sophomore Dave Frew (Worcester, MA) pitched five strong innings of relief to earn the win, the first of his college career. He allowed four hits and one earned run.
