MEDFORD - Visiting Brandeis scored five runs (four unearned) in the top of the first inning, and junior Tom McShane (Manchester, NH) pitched 8.1 innings allowing just five hits, as the Judges toppled local rival Tufts, 8-1, in college baseball action on Tuesday afternoon.
The win was the fifth straight for Brandeis, who improved to 16-8 overall. The Jumbos lost for the first time in four games, dropping to 15-6-1. Tufts was #3 and Brandeis was #7 in the latest New England coaches poll released on Monday.
Brandeis got five hits off Tufts senior starter Steve Lapham (Newburyport, MA) in the first. Freshman 3B Jeff Krasner (East Greenwich, RI) hit a two-out, two-run double, then scored on a double by junior C Sean Ewers (Old Lyme, CT) to highlight the outburst. Krasner's second double of the day plated sophomore DH David Graham (Cambridge, MA), who had singled and stolen second, in the third. Krasner then whacked his third double in the sixth and scored on a single by senior 2B Mike Dowdy (Waltham, MA) to give the Judges a 7-1 lead.
Meanwhile, McShane was allowing just one run to a Tufts lineup that entered the game averaging 7.9 per game. He struck out seven and allowed the lone run in the third. Tufts junior CF Evan Zupancic (Lake Oswego, OR) led off with a single and eventually scored on a ground out by junior SS Brian Shapiro (Swampscott, MA). Tufts put just one more runner on second base the rest of the way, with McShane recording 12 straight outs at one point.
Krasner finished 3 for 3 with two runs scored and three RBI for Brandeis. Graham finished 2 for 3 with two runs and an RBI. Dowdy also had two his and an RBI for Brandeis.
