BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Tufts baseball team completed a three-game sweep of Bowdoin on Saturday with a pair of wins on Saturday afternoon, 8-3 and 14-2. The Jumbos move to 15-5-1 while Bowdoin drops to 9-13. The Jumbos improved to 5-0 in the NESCAC East for first place.
Junior CF Evan Zupancic (Lake Oswego, OR) was red-hot in game one, giving Tufts the lead with a solo homer
in the third. In the fifth, he hit had a run-scoring single and later scored on
senior RF Dan Callahan's (Medfield, A) two-RBI base hit. Junior P Jon
Lee (Manhasset Hills, NY) went the distance for the Jumbos, scattering nine hits
in seven innings, allowing two runs. Andy Workman took the loss for Bowdoin, allowing five earned runs in just over three innings of work. Zupancic finished 3-5 with two RBI and two runs. Bowdoin was led by Rob Metzler's two
hits.
It was more of the same in game two for Bowdoin, as the Jumbos jumped ahead early with a five-run second inning. Zupancic and freshman C Bob Kenny (Milford, MA) each had home runs as Tufts posted 14 runs on the Polar Bears. Bowdoin made several fine catches in the outfield that prevent the Jumbos from scoring more runs. Kenny and sophomore LF Greg Hickey (Medway, MA) each had three hits and three runs batted in for the Jumbos. Sophomore P Randy Newsom (Cincinnati, OH) got the win with five great innings of relief, striking out nine Polar Bears during his stint. Bowdoin pitchers walked 11 Jumbos in the game.
