MEDFORD -- Host Tufts scored five runs in the sixth inning of the first game, then won game two in the tenth inning for a double-header sweep of Bates College in NESCAC East Division baseball action on Saturday afternoon.

Playing in their home, New England and NESCAC opener, Tufts improved to 8-3-1 overall and stretched their winning streak against Bates to 19 games. The Bobcats fell to 2-4-1 overall.

These games were originally scheduled to be played at Bates, so the Bobcats served as the home team. The first game was tied 2-2 until Tufts erupted for five runs in a decisive top of the sixth. Junior SS Brian Shapiro (Swampscott, MA) doubled to lead off the inning and scored on an error on the play. Senior 1B Tim Ayres (Irvine, CA) followed with a solo home run, then freshman C Bob Kenny (Milford, MA), junior 2B Jon Herbert (Davidsonville, MD) and senior RF Dan Callahan (Medfield, MA) stroked RBI singles.

Tufts junior pitcher Dave Martin (Arlington, MA) went the distance for the win, allowing just four hits and striking out eight. Bates scored both of its runs in the third on a sacrifice fly by senior RF John Merriman (Clinton, MA) and a single by sophomore SS Nate Maxwell (Newport, VA).

In the nightcap, Tufts scored a run without a hit in the top of the tenth for the winning run. Sophomore Nick Palange (Hudson, MA) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, was bunted to both second and third, and then scored on a deep sacrifice fly to center by Ayres. That spoiled a dramatic solo home run with one out in the bottom of the ninth by Bates sophomore CF Rob Maguire (Wayland, MA) that had tied the score at 5-5.

The nightcap was a back-and-forth affair. Sophomore 3B John O'Neill (Cumberland, RI) gave Bates a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first with a two-run single. The Jumbos surged to a 5-2 lead in the top of the fourth on a three-run home run by junior CF Evan Zupancic (Lake Oswego, OR). The Bobcats scored single runs on sacrifice flies in the fourth and fifth to pull within 5-4.

Shapiro, who gave up Maguire's game-tying blast to right center, earned the win in relief with relatively easy tenth. Jumbo sophomore Adam Kacamburas (North Reading, MA) had four hits in the two games, while Ayres drove home three runs total.
