MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- For the second straight day, the Tufts and Wesleyan baseball teams split a double-header in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) action on Sunday afternoon. The host Cardinals took the first game, 3-2, but the Jumbos rebounded with a 7-4 win in the nightcap.
The first game featured just seven hits between the teams, as Tufts sophomore Dave Martin (Arlington, MA) and Wesleyan's Will James threw complete games. The Cardinals scored their three runs in the first by virtue of three walks, a hit batter, an RBI single by Dave Echeverria and two Tufts errors. Martin settled down from there, but the Tufts offense could get little going against James (seven Ks). The Jumbos scored their only runs in the second when junior RF Dan Callahan (Medfield, MA) led off with a double and sophomore SS Brian Shapiro (Swampscott, MA) reached first on a passed ball after he struck out. Both players eventually scored on wild pitches.
Trailing 3-1 in the second game, Tufts rallied to take at 4-3 lead in the fifth. Freshman Dan LaPointe (Everett, MA) delivered a two-run single after sophomore CF Evan Zupancic (Lake Oswego, OR) had singled and scored on another wild pitch. Callahan triggered a three-run sixth for Tufts with a two-run double. Shapiro relieved sophomore starter Mike Byron (Hanover, MA) and earned the win with three innings of one-hit, no-earned runs pitching.Wesleyan had take its lead with RBI singles by Dan Diamond and Matt Johnson off Byron in the second, and a solo home run by Billy Robinson with two outs in the third.
Including yesterday's split (8-1 Tufts, 10-0 Wesleyan), these teams look to meet again when the NESCAC's four best teams gather for the league tournament beginning May 11.
The Jumbos play for the third straight day tomorrow when MIT visits Huskins Field for a single game starting at 3 pm.
