MEDFORD Sophomore P Dave Martin (Arlington, MA) threw eight no-hit innings and sophomore SS Brian Shapiro (Swampscott, MA) batted in seven runs as the Tufts Jumbos posted a 17-3 victory over the Massachusetts Maritime Academy Buccaneers in New England college baseball action on Wednesday afternoon.
Martin left the ballgame after eight innings with a no-hitter. Buccaneer junior SS John Muldoon (Wareham, MA) doubled off Tufts freshman reliever Randy Newsom (Cincinnati, OH) with two outs in the top of the ninth to spoil the no-hitter. Martin struck out five, allowing one earned run on a walk, a hit-batter and two sacrifices in the second. He had five 1-2-3 innings.
Shapiro, who went 4 for 6 with two doubles, began his RBI-a-thon in the bottom of the first with a two-run single. The Jumbos stole four bases in the third, including home by sophomore 2B Jon Herbert (Davidsonville, NC), and pushed their lead to 4-1. Shapiro added five more RBIs with hits in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings as Tufts put 12 runs on the scoreboard during that stretch. Junior RF Dan Callahan (Medfield, MA) added four hits and four RBIs including a bases-clearing double in the seventh to the Tufts attack. Freshman C Greg Hickey (Medway, MA) hit the first home run of his college career, a solo shot to lead off the eighth.
Tufts improves to 5-5-1 with its third straight win. Mass Maritime lost its third straight and dropped to 3-6.
