MEDFORD Tufts University freshman P Randy Newsom (Cincinatti, OH) pitched a complete game while junior 1B Tim Ayres (Irvine, CA) went 3 for 4 and knocked in six runs as the Tufts Jumbos trounced the MIT Engineers, 11-1, in Greater Boston college baseball action this afternoon.
Tufts controlled the game both offensively and defensively. Newsom had a terrific outing from the mound, holding the Engineers to only five hits while striking out six and walking none. MIT's only run of the game was scored by sophomore 1B Rob Wieker (Port Lucie, FL), who doubled, advanced on an error and scored on a single by senior CF Alvie Loreto (Anaheim, CA) in the top of the sixth.
Complementing Newsom's excellent pitching was the Jumbos' ferocious offense, led by Ayres. The offensive highlight of the game came in the bottom of the first when Ayres knocked out a three-run home run, his first of the year. The Jumbos scored five runs on three hits in the first. In the second, junior RF Dan Callahan's (Medfield, MA) sacrifice fly scored sophomore CF Evan Zupancic (Lake Oswego, OR) for the first of Callahan's two RBIs on the day.
The Jumbos added one run in the fifth, three more in the seventh, and one in the eighth. Ayres added to his home run with a one-run single in the fifth and a two-run double in the seventh. Sophomore 2B Jon Herbert (Davidsonville, NC) joined Ayres with a three-hit game.
With their ninth straight victory over MIT, Tufts now stands at 8-7-1 overall. MIT falls to 3-10.
