WATERVILLE, Me. -- Freshman pitcher Brandon Royce(Augusta,ME) pitched seven excellent innings allowing just one run on seven hits versus a Tufts line-up that score 46 runs versus Trinity last weekend, and Jon Lord (Dublin,NH) picked up the save as well as going 2 for 3 with a double and triple at the plate and drove in 2 of Colby's 4 runs, to lead the White Mules to a key NESCAC win over Tufts University 4-1. The win is Colby's first in league play, as is the loss for Tufts.

After two scoreless innings Colby's Andy Tripp(Saco,ME) got things started with a one out single in the third, Lord followed with a RBI double to the fence in right center driving in Tripp. Freshman catcher Eric Roy (Lisbon, ME) was not to be outdone as he roped a double to drive in Lord and give the White Mules all the runs they would need.

The same three would come back up in the fifth and the results were similar, with Tripp singling with one out, advancing to second on a wild pitch, and then Lord ripping a triple to drive in Tripp. Roy would then drive in Lord with a sacrifice fly to make the score 4-0. The Mules did all this damage against sophomore pitcher Jon Lee (Manhasset Hills, NY), who entered the game 4-0 with a 1.54 earned run average.

Tufts scored their only run in the top of the eighth as sophomore CF Evan Zupansic (Lake Oswego, OR) doubled and scored on sophomore 2B Jon Hebert's (Davidsonville, MD) single. The Jumbos threatened several other times, but Kevin Brunelle made several outstanding plays at shortstop, as the sophomore from Augusta, Me., recorded six put-outs, none biger than his game ending 6-4-3 double play.

The same two teams will go at it Saturday with game one of their doubleheader scheduled for 12 noon.
