WALTHAM, Mass. – Six Tufts pitchers held host Brandeis to two runs, and sophomore CF Evan Zupancic (Lake Oswego, OR) broke the game open with a two-run single in the sixth, as the Jumbos posted a 6-2 non-league victory over the Judges in Greater Boston college baseball action on Tuesday afternoon.

The Jumbos took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second on RBI singles by senior C Joe Surprenant (Tewksbury, MA) and freshman 3B Nick Palange (Hudson, MA). The Judges cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning on three straight singles by Lars Borssen, Cliff Smith and Mike Dowdy (RBI) off Tufts starter Randy Newsom (Cincinnati, OH). The hosts tied the score at 2-2 in the fourth off reliever Mike Byron (Hanover, MA), but the Jumbos regained the lead in the fifth when sophomore 2B Jon Herbert (Davidsonville, NC) walked and eventually scored on a ground out. In the sixth, Surprenant doubled home a run and then Zupancic gave Tufts a 6-2 margin with his two-run single.

In the only game of the week prior to this weeekend's three games at Colby, Tufts coach John Casey wanted to get the arms some innings in this game. Regular starters Jon Lee (Manhasset Hills, NY) and Steve Lapham (Newburyport, MA) each saw action in relief. Sophomore Chris Lovejoy (Madison, WI) earned the win by pitching a scoreless fifth. Palange went 3 for 3 for the Jumbos, while Surprenant also had three hits. Senior DH Cory Dolich (Alameda, CA) had two hits and scored two runs.

Andrew Kahn had three hits to lead Brandeis.
