MEDFORD – Junior RF Dan Callahan (Medfield, MA) went 3 for 3 with two home runs and four runs batted in to lead the Tufts University Jumbos to an 8-7 victory over the Bowdoin College Polar Bears in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) East Division baseball action on Friday afternoon. The game was the first of three between the teams this weekend.

The Jumbos had to withstand a ninth-inning Bowdoin rally to win it. Trailing 8-3 entering the ninth, the visiting Polar Bears scored four runs and had the tying run on second when the final out was recorded. Three runs came home on a two-out, bases-loaded, opposite-field double by freshman 1B Andy Workman (Ipswich, MA). Tufts sophomore Brian Shapiro (Swampscott, MA) moved from shortstop to the pitching mound to relieve sophomore starter Jon Lee (Manhasset Hills, NY) and got a ground ball with his only pitch for the final out with Workman on second.

Callahan gave Tufts an early 3-0 lead with a three-run home run in the first. The Jumbos pushed the margin to 4-0 in the third when Callahan singled and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by senior DH Cory Dolich (Alameda, CA). Bowdoin kept itself in the game by scoring three times in the top of the fourth, featuring doubles by freshman 3B Kevin Bougie (Sanford, ME) and senior SS Greg Lovely (Milton, MA) and a single by Workman.

The Bears put runners in scoring position against Lee in the sixth through eighth innings, but the sophomore righty worked out of the jams. Tufts added insurance runs in the fifth – on a solo home run by Callahan – and in the sixth on an RBI single by sophomore 2B Jon Herbert (Davidsonville, NC). They added two more runs in the eighth to lead 8-3 following back-to-back, two-out doubles by sophomore CF Evan Zupancic (Lake Oswego, OR) and Herbert followed by a Shapiro single.

Bowdoin rallied with two outs in the ninth on consecutive hits by Bougie, Lovely and Workman, who finished 3 for 5 with four RBI.

Tufts moves one step closer to securing a spot in the NESCAC Playoffs with the win. They improve to 8-1 in the NESCAC East and 15-9-1 overall. Bowdoin, clinging to its NESCAC Playoff hopes, dropped to 3-4 in the league and 11-15 overall.
