MEDFORD -- The host Tufts University Jumbos hit three homes runs and received complete-game pitching from sophomore Jon Lee (Manhasset Hills, NY) and junior Steve Lapham (Newburyport, MA) while sweeping a double-header from Bates College, 4-3 and 6-2, in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) East Division action on Sunday afternoon.Senior co-captain Todd Boutwell (Woburn, MA) cracked a two-run home run in the bottom of the first to give the Jumbos a 2-0 lead in the first game. Bates tied the score at 2-2 with a solo home run by senior RF Ben Bines (Lexington, MA) in the fourth and an RBI single by freshman 2B Ryan Waggoner (Long Beach, CA) in the fifth. Tufts took the lead for good on run-scoring singles by sophomore 2B Jon Herbert (Davidsonville, MD) and junior RF Dan Callahan (Medfield, MA) in the bottom of the fifth. Bines hit his second home run of the game in the sixth for Bates. Lee allowed just five hits and finished with 13 strike outs while earning the win for Tufts. Sophomore Ryan Weaver (Canton, OH) went the distance in a losing effort for Bates.
Sophomore CF Evan Zupancic (Lake Oswego, OR) led off the bottom of the first with a home run for Tufts in game two. Bates answered with a run in the third, and took a 2-1 advantage on a double by freshman CF Rob Maguire (Wayland, MA) and an RBi single by Waggoner. Tufts produced a four-run fifth inning highlighted by a three-run home run from Callahan to lead, 4-2. Lapham took it from there, finishing off a six-hit victory by closing with four shutout innings.
Boutwell drove in three runs in the two games for the Jumbos. Waggoner knocked home two for the Bobcats.
