WELLESLEY, Mass. -- The Tufts University baseball team received a brilliant pitching performance from sophomore Jon Lee (Manhasset Hills, NY) in game one and then scored seven runs in the first three innings of game two on its way to a double-header sweep of Babson College on Sunday afternoon. The Jumbos won the first game, 2-0, and then took the second contest, 11-5, to improve to 19-11-1 on the season.
Lee was masterful in game one, firing a complete-game one-hitter for his sixth win of
the season. Babson's only scoring threat
against the sophomore right-hander came in the second, when senior captain Dave Millman
drew a walk and advanced to second on a single to right by senior Pat Cutter. However,
after a sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third, Lee induced a strike out and
a pop up to second to escape trouble and preserve the shutout.
Babson starter Bill Fitzgerald, who entered the game with a perfect 5-0 record, matched zeros with Lee through the first four innings, but found himself in trouble in the fifth. With one out, Tufts sophomore Evan Zupancic (Lake Oswego, OR) doubled and then moved to third on a single by sophomore Jon Herbert (Davidsonville, MD). Junior Dan Callahan (Medfield, MA) followed with a sacrifice fly to right that scored Zupancic, giving the Jumbos a 1-0 lead.
Tufts added an insurance run in the seventh when senior Joe Surprenant (Tewksbury, MA) singled, was sacrificed to second, and scored on a base hit by Zupancic. That would be more than enough for Lee, who surrendered just one walk over then final five innings to clinch the 2-0 shutout victory.
In game two, Tufts struck for three runs in the first and four more in the second to jump out to an early 7-2 lead. Babson would score one run in the bottom of the third and two more on a two-run home run by senior Mike Santora in the fifth to cut its deficit to 7-5, but the Jumbos tacked on one in the sixth and three more in the seventh for the 11-5 final. Herbert recorded a home run and a double for Tufts, while Surprenant and freshman Dan LaPointe (Everett, MA) each added two hits and two RBIs in the winning effort. Junior Steve Lapham (Newburyport, MA) pitched five solid innings to earn the victory.
The Jumbos will play in the NESCAC Tournament at Williams next weekend (May 11-13) as the top seed in the East Divison. They play Amherst in the first round on Friday.
