MEDFORD -- The Boston Marathon was run nearby on Monday, but a college baseball marathon took place on Huskins Field as the Tufts University Jumbos outlasted the University of Massachusetts-Boston Beacons, 14-12. The game took 3:45 to play and included 15 errors, seven pitchers and 14 walks.

Tufts scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to break an 11-11 tie and go on to victory. Freshman RF Evan Zupancic (Lake Oswego, OR) and senior 2B Zack Brown (Melrose, MA) had RBI singles that helped give the Jumbos the lead for good. Senior P Mike Saucier (Dracut, MA) came on in relief to start the eighth and allowed just one unearned run over the final two innings to record his second save.

The Jumbos had led 10-4 through five innings, but the Beacons scored four in the sixth and then three in the top of the seventh to tie the score at 11-11. They scored the tying run on a suicide squeeze executed perfectly by senior CF Mike Cali (Brockton, MA) that scored sophomore C Matt Tapley (Pelham, NH), who had singled.

Brown had four hits to lead the Tufts offense. Freshman 1B Adam Waxman (Portland, ME) rapped three hits for the Beacons. Jumbos sophomore 1B Tim Ayres (Irvine, CA) hit his first home run of the year for a 6-0 Tufts lead in the second inning.

Tufts improved to 17-6 overall while UMass-Boston dropped to 14-17.
