MEDFORD -- Senior Jeff Russell (Quincy, MA) pitched a complete game, and the Suffolk University offense had 17 hits, as the Rams posted a 15-5 victory over the Tufts University Jumbos in New England college baseball action on Tuesday afternoon.
The game was meeting between two of New England's Top 10 teams in yesterday's coaches poll. Suffolk (24-7), tied for sixth in the poll, broke it open with four runs in the sixth and six more in the eighth. Tufts, fifth in the rankings, dropped to 17-7 overall.
Jumbo freshman 3B Brian Shapiro (Swampscott, MA) tied the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the first with a two-run home run, his third of the season. The Rams took the lead for good in the top of the second when junior CF Jared Leach (North Kingston, RI) doubled home senior 3B Nick Melchionna (Revere, MA), who had singled with two outs. After senior 2B Gabe Soto (Charlestown, MA) singled hom a run in the top of the fourth to give the Rams a 4-2 edge, Tufts closed the gap to 4-3 in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by junior 1B Nick Scola (Worcester, MA).
The Rams then scored 11 runs in innings five through eight while Russell held the Jumbos to just one hit during that span. They had three hits, two walks and a hit by pitch in the sixth, then three hits and four walks in the eighth. Freshman LF Bryan McManaway (Bay Shore, NY) finished with three hits and three RBIs for the Rams, who also got four hits and four runs scored from Melchionna.
Scola had two hits and two RBIs for the Jumbos.
