ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- Sophomore RF Dan Callahan (Medfield, MA) drove home three runs and senior Nick Svencer (Mystic, CT) went the distance allowing just five hits as the Tufts baseball team defeated defending Division III National Champion North Carolina Wesleyan College, 8-2, on Thursday.
Tufts put three runs on the board in the top of the first, with a single by Zack Brown (Melrose, MA), a walk by Todd Boutwell (Woburn, MA) and then a two-run double by Callahan. Tim Ayres (Irvine, CA) then singled home Callahan.
The Bishops closed the gap with two runs in the bottom of the second on a home run by Jon Markle. The Jumbos answered with four in the fifth, led off by a Boutwell double. He was singled in by Callahan, who was then doubled home by Ayres (2-4, 2 rbi). After Brian Shapiro (Swampscott, MA) reached on an error, Josh Marks (Tucson, AZ) singled home two runs.
The Jumbos improved to 5-0, their best spring start since the program began taking the trip in 1988.
