MEDFORD -- Tufts freshman Brian Shapiro (Swampscott, MA) earned an important 4-2 victory over Colby College for the Jumbos in his first career start on the mound. It helpd Tufts split a double-header in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) baseball action on Sunday afternoon. Colby won the first game, 12-3.
In game two, Shapiro allowed just three hits in five innings during his first college start and also hit a solo home run in the second inning. The Jumbos built a 4-0 lead in the third inning when freshman 2B Jon Herbert (Davidsonville, MD) stroked a two-run double with two outs after the inning had been extended by a Colby error. The White Mules cut the margin in half to 4-2 in the fifth when freshman CF Jon Moro (Rockport, ME) singled, Goldman walked, then both scored on wild pitches by Shapiro. Tufts senior P Nick Svencer (Mystic, CT) entered in the sixth and pitched two hitless innings for his first save. Freshman Pat Conley (Bath, ME) pitched well in a losing effort, giving up six hits and just two earned runs.
The game two win was Tufts' 20th of the season, the first time the Jumbos have reached that mark since 1996. They are 20-11 overall and 7-3 in the league. Colby moved to 11-15 overall and 3-10 in NESCAC play.
