MEDFORD -- Senior P Dave Cimini (Fairfield, CT) didn't allow a hit over the first five-plus innings and finished with a five-hitter as the visiting Brandeis University Judges posted a 5-0 victory over the Tufts University Jumbos in New England college baseball action on Thursday afternoon.
By the time Cimini allowed his first hit of the game with two outs in the Tufts sixth - a single by junior 3B Kevin Marotta (Rockfall, CT) - the Judges led 4-0. Cimini drove home the first run with a single in the fourth after senior 3B Adam Zoldak (Gardner, MA) reached on an error and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Sophomore CF Jim Freethey (Manchester, NH) then blasted a three-run home run with two outs in the fifth, one of five Brandeis hits in the inning.
Tufts put runners on second and third against Cimini in the seventh on a leadoff single by junior DH Cory Dolich (Alameda, CA) and a double by sophomore 1B Tim Ayres (Irvine, CA). The 6-4, 210-pound righthander got out of the jam with a ground out and a strike out. He finished the day with six strike outs. The Jumbos didn't threaten the rest of the game.
Brandeis scored a single run in the seventh inning by way of three Tufts errors. The Judges won for the seventh time in their last eight games to even their record at 16-16. The victory avenged a 9-4 loss to the Jumbos earlier this season. Tufts, which was shut out for the second time this season, dropped its fourth in a row and fell to 17-10 overall.
Tufts starter Steve Lapham (Newburyport, MA) went seven innings, allowing three earned runs and striking out six. Cimini and freshman LF Jon Brown (Topsfield, MA) each had three hits to combine for two-thirds of Brandeis' nine hits. No one in the Tufts order had more than one hit.
