MEDFORD -- Sophomore P Steve Lapham (Newburyport, MA) threw a three-hit shutout, and the Tufts offense exploded for 23 hits, as the Jumbos pounded Babson College, 19-0, in New England college baseball action on Monday afternoon. The game was shortened to seven innings.

Tufts freshman CF Evan Zupancic (Lake Oswego, OR) was 5 for 5 with three doubles and seven runs batted in to lead the Jumbo attack. Freshman 2B Jon Herbert (Davidsonville, MD) had three hits (two doubles) and three RBIs, and senior SS Mike Gray (Teaneck, NJ) had four hits and three RBIs.

Tufts scored four runs in the second, five in the third and eight in the fifth. Eight players drove in runs. Zupancic drilled a two-run double to highlight the second and his bases-loaded-clearing double was the big hit in the fifth. Herbert had a two-run double in the fifth. It marked the second straight year that Tufts crushed Babson, following last spring's 27-7 Jumbo victory.

Lapham didn't need the overwhelming offensive support, allowing just three singles and one walk in seven innings for his team-high third shutout of the season. Babson had runners on first and third in the first inning, but Lapham got a strike out to squelch that rally. The Beavers did not reach second base the rest of the game, with Tufts sophomore RF Dan Callahan (Medfield, MA) throwing out Babson junior LF Pat Cutter (Nashua, NH) as he tried to stretch a single into a double in the second. Cutter had two hits for the Beavers.

The Jumbos, ranked eighth in this week's New England coaches poll, moved to 21-11 overall. That ties a record for wins in a season also held by the 1994 and 1990 teams. They will attempt to break that mark tomorrow night at Eastern Connecticut. Babson dropped to 16-14 overall.
