JUMBO 3B SAM SAGER SELECTED AS NESCAC PLAYER OF
THE WEEK
MEDFORD
-- For the second straight week, a member of the red-hot Tufts
University baseball team has been honored by the New England Small
College Athletic Conference (NESCAC). This week it's sophomore third
baseman Sam Sager (Cranston, RI), who was the offensive star
of the team's doubleheader sweep of NESCAC East Division rival
Trinity College on Sunday. He is the conference's Player of the
Week.
Sager won game one with a walk-off home run in the bottom of the
10th inning, in a game that was originally scheduled for seven
innings. Tufts won 5-4, breaking an eight-game losing streak against
the Bantams. Batting fifth in the line-up, Sager was 1 for 4 with a
walk, two runs scored and the game-winning RBI. He picked up where
he left off in the second game, hitting a double to center field in
the bottom of the first inning that knocked home two runs to give
the Jumbos a 2-0 lead. He finished the nightcap 2 for 3 with a walk,
a run scored and two RBI.
For the two games, Sager finished 3 for 7 (.429) with two doubles, a
home run, two walks, three runs scored, and three RBI. The sweep
gave the Jumbos sole possession of first place in the NESCAC East at
7-1. Tufts has won 13 of 14 overall to improve to 17-3. They are the
#1 team in New England this week.
Sager is currently tied for second in NESCAC with 11 doubles
entering the week. He is hitting .355 overall (27/76) with a
team-high 21 RBI and a second-best 18 runs scored entering the
Jumbos' doubleheader against UMass Dartmouth on Monday. He has an
OPS of 1.045 with a .605 slugging mark and .440 on-base percentage.
Last week, Jumbo reliever Ed Bernstein (Foxborough, MA)
earned NESCAC Pitcher of the Week honors.
