MEDFORD
-- For the second time in program history, the Tufts University
baseball team will host the New England Small College Athletic
Conference (NESCAC) Championship this weekend (May 7-9). Games will
be held at Tufts' Huskins Field and at Bentley University's DeFelice
Field.
The Jumbos won the NESCAC East Division pennant this spring with a
10-2 record, earning the right to host the conference championship.
They will face West Division #2 seed Wesleyan University in the
first round of the championship on Friday at 3 pm. West Division
champion Williams College and East Division #2 Bowdoin College will
play in the other first-round game at Bentley University beginning at 3
pm. Friday's losers will play at Bentley University on Saturday morning
at 10:30 am, while the winners will meet at Tufts at 10:30 am. The
tournament's fifth game will be played at Tufts on Saturday at 2:30
pm. For the finals on Sunday, a 10 am game will be followed if
necessary by another game to determine the champion.
Tufts hosted NESCAC's in 2002, when they won the conference title
and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. This season, Tufts is 28-5
overall to set a new school record for wins. They eclipsed the
previous mark of 27 wins by the 2002 team. Coach John Casey's team entered the D3Baseball.com national poll
this week at #20.
Tufts is the #1 team in the New England Intercollegiate Baseball
Association (NEIBA) poll.
Wesleyan brings a 22-12 record into
this weekend's tournament. Williams has a 22-10-1 overall record and
is the seventh-ranked squad in the NEIBA poll. Bowdoin (23-13)
received three votes in this week's NEIBA poll. Tufts has only
played the Polar Bears previously this season, taking two out of
three in Maine April 23-24.
JumboCast, Tufts University student
webcasting outfit, will carry all of the tournament games that are
held at Huskins Field this weekend. That includes Friday's Tufts vs.
Wesleyan game at 3 pm, Saturday's 12:30 pm winner's bracket game and
the 2:30 pm second elimination game, and Sunday's finals round with
a 10 am game followed by an if necessary contest. Those webcasts can
be viewed for free at
