MEDFORD
-- Among the many contributors to the Tufts University baseball
team's 2010 New England Small
College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) championship, senior 1B/OF
Nate Bankoff (Lynnfield, MA) and sophomore closer Chris
DeGoti (Miami, FL) have been chosen to represent the Jumbos as
this week's Player and Pitcher of the Week in the conference.
The Jumbos swept through the NESCAC Championship, defeating Wesleyan
5-4 in the first round Friday, outlasting Williams 14-12 in the
winner's bracket, and then defeating Bowdoin 6-1 in the final on
Sunday. Bankoff and DeGoti played key roles in each victory.
Against Wesleyan, Bankoff played first base went 2 for 4 with three
RBI and a run scored. He knocked in the first run of the game with a
double to left, and later added a two-run double to the gap in
right-center and scored to give the Jumbos a 4-1 lead. DeGoti got
four outs at the end of the game for a save, including three by
strikeout.
Starting in left field against the Ephs, Bankoff drove home three
runs again. He hit a run-scoring single in the fourth, and then
brought home two runs with a base hit in the sixth. He finished 2
for 6 and also scored twice. DeGoti entered the game with Tufts
leading 13-8, but with the bases loaded. He went on to record seven
outs, four by strikeout to earn his second save of the tournament.
In the final against Bowdoin, Bankoff scored the first run in the
sixth after walking to lead off the inning and then walked again and
scored in the seventh. DeGoti got the last three outs, giving Tufts
its first NESCAC title since the 2002 season.
For the three games, Bankoff drove in six runs and scored five.
DeGoti worked all three games and a total of 4.2 innings.
Tufts has received five NESCAC weekly honors for the 2010 season.
DeGoti is the third pitcher to be recognized, and Bankoff is the
second player.
Coach John Casey's Jumbos will play in the NCAA Division III New
England Regional at Eastern Connecticut State University beginning
on May 19.
