MEDFORD
-- The Tufts University baseball team, which won the New England
Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) title and earned the #1
seed in the NCAA Division III Regional, finished the 2010 season as
the #10 team in the final American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/College
Baseball national poll dated June 3.
Coach John Casey's Jumbos finished with a 34-7 record, blowing away
the previous team record for wins (27 by the 2002 Tufts team). With
an 8-2 mark out of the gate, the Jumbos came home from their spring
break trip south with their best record since the 2000 season. They
set a new school record for wins with their 28th in the final game
of the regular-season at Bentley on May 4. Tufts had a 28-5 record
for the regular-season.
The Jumbos won the NESCAC East Division pennant in 2010 with a 10-2
record, earning the right to host the conference championship at
Huskins Field. Along with sweeping through conference foes to win
their second NESCAC title against Bowdoin on May 9, the team also
presented Coach Casey with the 500th victory of his Tufts coaching
career that day.
As the #1 seed at the NCAA Regional hosted by Eastern Connecticut
State University, Tufts finished as the runner-up to UMass Boston
following two victories over St. Joseph's of Maine and one against
host Eastern Connecticut.
