MEDFORD
-- Sophomore shortstop David LeResche (St. Louis, MO/John
Burroughs) and freshman pitcher Chris DeGoti (Miami, FL/Belen
Jesuit Prep), two of the young leaders of the 2009 Tufts
University baseball team, were recognized today as two of the top
players in the region. Both are on the New England Intercollegiate
Baseball Association's All-New England Third Team.
Tufts improved greatly through the course of the season, completing
the New England portion of their schedule with a 17-10 record. The
Jumbos qualified for the conference tournament and reached the
finals. The every-game performance of LeResche and the pitching of
DeGoti were key factors in the team's success.
LeResche led the Jumbos with 18 multiple-hit games and 11
multiple-RBI games. He was especially hot down the stretch,
finishing the season with a 15-game hitting streak. He found a home
in the third spot of the batting order and led the Jumbos in most
offensive categories, including with a .376 batting average and 33
RBI. He also posted a solid .943 fielding percentage.
DeGoti emerged as the team's best pitcher out of the bullpen,
finishing with a 4-0 record and led the league with five saves in 18
appearances (three starts). He recorded a team-low 3.43 earned run
average and struck out 33 in 39.1 innings. During one stretch of
nine relief appearances from April 10 through May 3, he recorded
four saves and a 1.93 earned run average.
Tufts was 19-19 overall this spring, 7-5 in the NESCAC East Division
and 8-3 against their non-divisional opponents in New England.
