BAILEY TAKE NESCAC PITCHER OF THE WEEK AWARDS
MEDFORD When the Tufts University baseball and softball teams
opened their NESCAC East Division seasons on Friday afternoon at
home, both teams received superb pitching performances that led them
to victory. Today, baseball's Adam Telian (Stoughton,
MA/Stoughton) and softball's Erica Bailey (Scottsdale,
AZ/Chaparral), both juniors, were selected for the conference's
recently-established Pitcher of the Week awards. New
this year, NESCAC is presenting Pitcher of the Week awards in
addition to Player of the Week honors. Telian earns the honors for
his efforts in a 4-2 Jumbo victory over Bates that got the Jumbos
moving towards a three-game sweep of the Bobcats during the weekend.
Bailey has been recognized for shutting down Bates for an 8-1
victory that helped softball take two out of three games over the
weekend. Both pitchers allowed first-inning runs, but were then
dominant. Telian struck out 11 Bobcats in six innings
of work. He gave up six hits and no walks, and the run was unearned.
In the second and third innings combined, he struck out five Bates
hitters in a row and six of seven overall. With the Jumbos leading
just 3-1, he faced down a Bobcats rally with runners on second and
third and no outs. He also picked off a base-runner in the first.
Bailey mowed down the Bobcats from the second inning through the
seventh. She retired 11 in a row at one point and allowed just one
Bates runner to reach second in those six innings. Overall, she
allowed just three hits and one runs while striking out eight in
seven innings. She also went 1 for 3 with an RBI at bat.
Telian is currently fifth in NESCAC with 22 strike outs in 22.2
innings. In three starts overall, he is 2-0 with a 0.79 earned run
average (two earned runs). Thirteen of the 15 hits he's allowed have
been singles and opponents are batting .188 against the lefty. He's
walked just four and has not hit a batter. Head coach John Casey's
Jumbos are 10-4 overall. Bailey is among the
conference's top 10 with her 3.03 earned run average in 30 innings
of work. She sports a 4-1 record and has struck out 23 batters
against 10 walks. Head coach Cheryl Milligan's team has a 10-5
record. #
