BOSTON -- In its last opportunity to run an NCAA qualifying time,
the Tufts University men's indoor track & field team's distance
medley relay did so in outstanding fashion on Saturday afternoon at
Boston University during the IC4A Championships.
The Jumbo foursome of sophomore Ben Crastnopol (Doylestown, PA),
senior Jesse Faller (Burlington, MA),
senior quad-captain Billy Hale (Menlo Park, CA), and senior
Matt Tirrell (Burlington, MA) finished with an NCAA automatic
qualifying time of 9:59.97 (converted from 9:56.97 due to the banked
track at BU). With the converted time, Tufts is currently ranked fourth
nationally and is qualified to compete at the 2010 NCAA Division III
Championships next weekend (Mar. 5-6) at DePauw University in
Greencastle, Indiana. The automatic standard is 10 minutes flat.
The actual 9:56.97 mark stands as the new Tufts record, erasing last
season's 9:59.33 time from the record book. Hale and Faller were the
bookends of that record foursome last year. The Jumbos were sixth out of
27 entrants in the DMR at the IC4A meet on Saturday.
Coach Ethan Barron also entered the Jumbo 4x800 meters relay into the
IC4A's. With three members of the foursome that set a school record
(7:42.67) in the event last week, Tufts had another good effort with a
7:45.10 time. Senior Jason Hanrahan (Westport, CT) led off,
followed by freshman Dan Kirschner (Short Hills, NJ), freshman Jeff Marvel (Naples, FL),
and freshman Sam Haney (Essex, CT) to finish 14th at the meet.
Tufts will now await to hear if anyone will join the DMR at
Nationals. Senior Jared Engelking (Westborough, MA) is provisionally
qualified in the pentathlon and 55-meter hurdles. Faller is also in good
position for the 5,000 meters.
