NORTHAMPTON -- Senior quad-captain Jared Engelking
(Westborough, MA) became the third straight Tufts athlete to win
the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) pentathlon when he
did it on Friday night at the 2010 ECAC Men's Indoor Track & Field
Championships at Smith College. Engelking, who scored 3,529 points,
follows Skip Pagel in 2009 and Nate Scott in 2008 as the Jumbos who
have three-peated in the ECAC pentathlon.
Engelking's score improved his NCAA provisional qualifying mark by 16
points. He's currently ranked 14th. Engelking won the 55-meter hurdles
portion of the ECAC pentathlon with a time of 7.76 seconds to score 893
points. He added 753 points to his total with a time of 2:51.22 in the
1,000 meter run.
Freshman Michael Blair (Wellesley, MA) was the only other
Jumbo to score at the ECAC's. He tied for sixth in the high jump with
6'2 3/4" (1.9m) clearance. His 2.5 points scored helped Tufts to a 12.5
total that gave them 24th place at the meet. Other members of the team
competed at the IC4A Championships on Saturday.
The Jumbos will now await word on whether their NCAA provisional
qualifiers are invited to the national meet, which will be held next
Friday and Saturday (Mar. 12-13) at DePauw University in Greencastle,
Indiana. Besides the pentathlon, Engelking is also provisionally
qualified in the 55-meter hurdles. Senior Jesse Faller (Burlington,
MA) is in good position for the 5,000 meters, and the distance
medley relay ran an automatic qualifying time of 9:59.97 (converted from
9:56.97) at the IC4A Championships hosted Boston University today. That
foursome is sophomore Ben Crastnopol (Doylestown, PA), Faller,
senior quad-captain Billy Hale (Menlo Park, CA), and senior
Matt Tirrell (Burlington, MA).
