Jared Engelking won the pentathlon with an NCAA qualifying score

LEWISTON, Me. -- Senior quad-captain Jared Engelking (Westborough, MA) of the Tufts University men's indoor track & field team won the 2010 New England Division III pentathlon championship on Friday at Bates College. Engelking's score of 3,513 points is well over the 3,350 NCAA Division III provisional qualifying standard.

The runner-up in the event last season, Engelking is the third Tufts athlete in the last four years to win the New England Division III indoor pentathlon. He scored a whopping 860 points in the 55-meter hurdles with a winning time of 7.89 seconds, and added 761 more points with his 2:50.44 finish in the 1,000 meters. Engelking did not score fewer than 600 points in any of the five events. He finished with a 66-point margin of victory over Williams College's Isaac Nicholson (3,447).

His victory helped Tufts narrowly earn third place at the meet. Coach Ethan Barron's team finished with 65 points, two ahead of fourth-place Amherst (63) and four ahead of fifth-place Southern Maine (61).

Engelking returned on Saturday to finish as the runner-up in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 7.85 seconds. He was followed in third place by classmate Trevor Donadt (Northborough, MA), who had a time of 7.9 seconds.

Freshman Jeff Marvel (Naples, FL) was a strong contributor to the team's effort. He ran third in the 800 meters, crossing the finish line with a 1:57.01 time. He also ran the second leg of the third-place 4x800 relay that had a 7:58.01 time. Senior Jason Hanrahan (Westport, CT), senior quad-captain Billy Hale (Menlo Park, CA), and freshman Dan Kirschner (Short Hills, NJ) made up the rest of the 4x8 team.

Freshman Matt Rand (Cape Elizabeth, ME) added six points to the team total with his third place in the 5,000 meter run (15:19.71).

MIT won the team title with 132.5 points. Williams College was the runner-up with 109 points.

Tufts is at BU for the All-New England Championships next weekend (Feb. 26-27).
