All-American decathlete Jared Engelking

MARIETTA, Ohio -- After a strong second day of competition in the decathlon at the 2009 NCAA Division 3 Men's Outdoor Track & Field Championships, Tufts University junior Jared Engelking (Westborough, MA) finished in third place overall to earn All-American honors in the event.

Engelking finished with a total of 6,834 points. On Thursday, he scored a combined total of 3,458 points in the 100-meter dash, long jump, shot put, high jump and 400-meter dash to place ninth out of 17 decathletes after one day. On Friday, Engelking jumped six places to finish third overall. He scored a combined 3,376 points in the 100-meter hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw and 1,500-meter run. Junior Josh Lovell of Linfield College won the NCAA decathlon with 7,080 points.

Engelking's best performances in Thursday's events were a time of 11.48 seconds in the 100-meter dash for 757 points and a time of 50.59 seconds in the 400-meter dash for 788 points. In his signature event to lead off Friday's competition, the 110-meter hurdles, he finished in 15.07 seconds for 841 points. He won that event, and also was first in the discus throw with a 128'2" (39.08m) toss for 646 points.

Tufts senior quad-captain Skip Pagel (Mystic, CT) pulled a hamstring and had to withdraw from the decathlon after two events on Thursday. He was ranked second out of 17 NCAA entrants after scoring a school-record 6,871 points in the event at the All-New England Championships hosted by UMass May 8-9.

Engelking's NCAA score was just shy of Pagel's school record. It was more than 250 points better than his NCAA qualifying mark of 6,582 points scored at the New England Division 3 meet at Springfield College April 30-May 1. Engelking's third-place finish at NCAA's scored six points for Tufts, which tied them for 49th place at the meet.

Jumbo junior Jesse Faller (Burlington, MA) raced in the 5,000 meters on Saturday and finished 11th with a 15:08.98 finish.
